Difference Between Static and Dynamic Routing Protocol

Static routing:
  • Static routing addition will be done by network administrator.
  • Administrative distance i.e AD value for static routing will be 1.
  • Router will not share static routes with each other.
Routed protocol:
  • Static routing supports routed protocol its a layer 3 protocol, logical address to the device and routes data between the networks (IP).
Advantage of static routing:
  • Minimal memory overhead
  • No bandwidth overhead
  • Granular control on traffic is routed.
Disadvantage:
  • Infrastructure changes needs to be manually adjusted.
  • No dynamic fault tolerance if the link goes down.
  • Impractical on large network to fnd the issue for small network static routing will be useful.
Dynamic Routing:
  • Dynamic routing tables will be created and updated by protocols.
Routing protocol:
  • Routing protocols dynamically builds the network topology next hop information.
Advantage:
  • Simpler to configure using routing protocols.
  • Dynamically choose the alternate route, incase if any live network link goes down.
  • Routing protocol has an ability to load balance between multiple links based on metrics.
  • Regular routing updates are shared between the routers consuming the bandwidth.
Disadvantage:
  • Routing protocols will put load on CPU Ram.
  • The choice of last route will be in the hands of routing protocol.
