How Does IEEE802.11ax WiFi 6 Radio is So Fast ?
Peak wireless speed is product of four factors,
IEEE802.11ax which let's first wave based on OFDMA technology, IEEE802.11ax Ap(access points) supports 8 spatial streams and delivers up to 4800 mbps at the physical layer. To get better user experience based on vendor or client implementation at mac layer it's able to get higher throughput.
As compared to IEEE802.11ac, IEEE802.11ax support both the dual bands 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The IEEE802.11ax clients can Take advantage of 2.4 GHz. It takes benefits right away, most important IEEE802.11ax is a 2.4GHz importantly increases the range of WiFi coverage, by adding standard based on sounding and beam forming.
This enables new used cases for increased indoor and outdoor coverages.

Peak wireless speed is product of four factors,
- Channel bandwidth
- Constellation density
- Number of spatial streams
- Per symbol overhead
- IEEE802.11ax pushes constellations density by adding 1024 QAM but more importantly improves the per symbol overhead with flexible timing parameters.
- First of all current WiFi technology uses IEEE802.11ac with 256 QAM but by using 1024 QAM which increases peak rates by 10/8=1.25 percent times. With less denser cell with constellations being closer in that cell is more sensitive to noise, so at short range 1024 QAM helps more.
- IEEE802.11ac 256 QAM is more reliable as compared to 1024 QAM IEEE802.11ax. But 1024 QAM does not require more antenna's than 256 QAM, IEEE802.11ax 1024 QAM can be easily implemented with existing physical network or system.
IEEE802.11ax or WiFi Radio 6 achieves benefits by pushing on three different dimensions as given below.
- By using 1024 QAM which uses denser modulation due to that enables more than speed bursts by 35 percent.
- Also uses OFDMA (orthogonal frequency division multiple access) based scheduling to reduce the latency and overhead.
- Robust higher efficiency signalling for better operation at a significantly lower RSSI (received signal strength indication).
