Comparison Between IEEE802.11ax and IEEE802.11ac

Comparison Between IEEE802.11ax and IEEE802.11ac-determinism

Based on speed and spatial streams we can calculate the speed of WiFi technology.

  • Speed is directly proportional to the number of spatial streams used by WiFi standard. Based on more spatial stream which requires more antenna's and RF(Radio frequency) antenna and RF chains at transmitter(Tx) and receiver(Rx). The antenna should be placed in 1/3 wavelength (3/4 inch at 5GHz).
  • IEEE802.11ax in which AP(access points) to support upto 8 spatial streams, which increases twice the maximum number provided in IEEE802.11ac products today.

IEEE802.11ac:
  • Phy IEEE802.11ac - bandwidth (as number of sub carriers)  for 234 (80MHz) and 234*2(160MHz).
  • Data bits per second calculation
            5/6*log 2(256)=6.67
  • Time per OFDMA symbol (800 ns)-  4 micro seconds.
  • Spatial streams - 1ss,2ss,3ss,4ss
  • 1ss-390 Mbps, 780Mbps, 600 Mbps
  • 2ss-1.17 Gbps, 1.8 Gbps
  • 3ss-1.56 Gbps, 3.12 Gbps
  • 4ss- no speed available

IEEE802.11ax:
  • Phy IEEE802.11ax- bandwidth (as number of sub carriers)  for 980 (80MHz) and 980*2(160MHz).
  • Data bits per second calculation
            5/6*log 2(1024)=8.33
  • Time per OFDMA symbol (800 ns)-  13.6 micro seconds.
  • Spatial streams - 1ss,2ss,3ss,4ss
  • 1ss-1.2 Gbps
  • 2ss-1.8 Gbps, 3.6 Gbps
  • 3ss-2.4 Gbps, 4.8 Gbps
  • 4ss- 4.8 Gbps
Providing gigabit data rates within single spatial streams using 1024 QAM for IEEE802.11ax offers peak throughput output theoretically achieved regularly in low density enterprise environments.

When a client density i.e(access point density)increases, likely hood of achieving these higher throughput diminishes as Channel contention usage increases from client usage i.e Basic set services (BSS). We often refer to this later degradation of co-channel  interference

Co-channel interference is particularly problematic in open space places such as conference rooms, public places like park, public hotspot where RF propagation will be close to ideal or LOS(line of sight)

IEEE802.11ax works on scheduling based on OFDMA which is similar to but distinct from LTE radio Network which works on robustness of WiFi in unlicensed spectrum.

OFDMA assures the IEEE802.11ax with contention free transmission to multiple clients in both the downlink with Txop(transmission operation)  with single transmission opportunity. To this second addition will be multiuser EDCA(enhanced distributed channel access)  to uplink - OFDMA allows to access clients to access with priority to IEEE802.11ax instead IEEE802.11ac

Both IEEE802.11ax and IEEE802.11ac not only more efficient and less probe to packet loss and filter due to the connection.
